Made to Measure Kilts & Tartan Trews

Bespoke Highlandwear & Wedding Outfits, Fitted Your Way

Whether you’re in Bristol or anywhere else across the UK. Haig-Harrison’s brings genuine, one-on-one Highlandwear expertise to your made-to-measure kilt or tartan trews. For the most accurate fit, Jayne and Caitlin measure you themselves, in person, at our Bristol shop. If a visit isn’t practical, we’ll guide you by FaceTime and email through taking your own measurements and choosing your cloth — the best alternative to an in-person fitting.

You Don’t Have to Go to Scotland, Wales or Ireland For This

Most made-to-measure Highlandwear specialists are based in Scotland, Wales, Ireland (or the rest of the world!) which means travel, or trusting your measurements submitted online.

Visit our Bristol shop and we’ll measure you ourselves, with the same expert eye for cloth, style and tartan sourcing you’d get from any Scottish/Welsh or Irish-based specialist. Can’t get to us? We’ll guide you by video and email through taking your own measurements, choosing your style and cloth, and finding the right tartan — including which weaver currently makes it, and what your options are if it isn’t being woven right now.

Pricing, Honestly Explained

Where the cloth we use is also sold direct to the public, we price it to match — you’re not paying more for the tartan by going through us. What you’re paying for is the measuring, the fitting advice, seeing cloth and tartan samples in person if you’d like to before committing, and access to our own in-house seamstress — for adjustments beyond what’s covered in your appointment, extra accessories made from any additional cloth, and a thorough quality check on the finished garment, because we know exactly what’s expected. Going direct to a mill also carries a real risk: made-to-measure orders are typically non-refundable if the measurements, cloth weight, or style turn out to be wrong — a mistake that’s much less likely when we’re the ones measuring you. A mill won’t offer any of that for an order you measured yourself. As a guide:

  • Hand-sewn kilt, 8 yards: from £577
  • Casual (machine-sewn) kilt: from £438
  • Standard tartan trews: from £362, cloth included

Exact price depends on your waist/seat size, the cloth’s weight and width, and your chosen tartan — get a tailored quote below.

Not Ready to Invest Yet? Try Before You Commit

Not sure a made-to-measure kilt or tartan trews is the right first step for you? You can hire a kilt outfit from us first, to get a proper feel for the look, cut and tartan before making that investment. And while you build towards your complete made-to-measure outfit, you don’t need to buy everything at once — hire individual accessories, such as sporrans, jackets or Ghillie brogues, to complete your look in the meantime. It’s a flexible, low-pressure way to put together a full Highland outfit at your own pace.

Start Your Bespoke Journey

Step 1 — Email us for your free quote, no charge. Send your tartan (if you already know it), your average waist size, and the date of your first function to bristolmenshire@gmail.com — or call us on 01179 737461 — and we’ll reply with a full price before you book or pay anything.

Step 2 — Happy to go ahead? Book your £100 consultation, in-store or online. Look for “Kilt or Tartan Trews Made-to-Measure Consultation (in-store)” or “Made to Measure Kilt – Remote Consultation” online. In-store, we measure you ourselves and you can see cloth and tartan samples in person if you’d like to. Online, we guide you through measuring yourself by video call — you’ll just need a tape measure and a friend to help. Either way, the £100 is credited in full against your order if you go ahead with us. You’re not committed to ordering through us: once you’ve been measured, you can place your order with us there and then, or take your own accurate measurements away to order elsewhere, including direct online.

FAQ

How much does a made to measure kilt cost?

A hand-sewn 8-yard kilt is from £577, a machine-sewn casual kilt from £438, and made-to-measure tartan trews from £362 including cloth. The exact price depends on your waist/seat size (which determines how many yards of cloth are needed), the cloth’s weight and width, and your chosen tartan — email us your tartan, waist size and event date (or call us) and we’ll give you a firm, no-obligation quote before you book or pay anything.

Is it cheaper to buy the tartan direct from the mill myself?

Not through us, no. Where our supplier also sells direct to the public, we price the cloth to match, so there’s no markup to avoid by going elsewhere. What you’re paying us for is the measuring, the advice on cloth and cut, and access to our own in-house seamstress — for adjustments beyond your appointment, extra accessories made from additional cloth, and a thorough quality check on the finished garment, which a mill won’t offer for a self-measured order. It’s also worth knowing that made-to-measure orders placed direct with a mill are usually non-refundable — if your measurements, cloth weight, or style choice turn out to be wrong, there’s often no way to put it right. Booking your measuring appointment with us significantly reduces that risk.

Do I have to come to Bristol?

Not necessarily — but either way, you don’t need to visit us (or book anything) just to get a price. Email or call us first with your tartan, waist size and event date, and we’ll give you a full quote at no charge. If a visit isn’t practical for the appointment itself, we offer a £100 remote video consultation where we guide you through taking your own measurements and choosing your cloth — you’ll just need a tape measure and a friend to help. In-store measuring appointments are also £100 and include seeing cloth and tartan samples in person if you’d like to, and the £100 is credited in full against your order if you go ahead with us — with no obligation to if you’d rather take your measurements elsewhere. We can’t guarantee quite the same fit accuracy remotely as we can in person, though — measuring you ourselves at our Bristol shop is the only way we can be confident in the result.

How long does a made to measure kilt take?

Standard turnaround is around 8-16 weeks, subject to cloth availability. We recommend contacting us at least 6 months before your first function, such as a wedding.

Can you source any tartan?

We have over 4,000 authentic tartans readily available, and can specially source or arrange custom weaving for anything outside that range.

Do I have to order through you after the £100 appointment?

No. You’ll get a full price up front before you even book, and at your appointment — whether in-store or by video call — you’ll see samples if you’d like to (in-store) or measure yourself with our guidance and a friend’s help (online), get properly measured, and have all the information you need to decide. If you go ahead with us, the £100 comes straight off your order. If you’d rather take your own accurate measurements away and order elsewhere — including direct with the mill online — that’s entirely your choice, no pressure either way.
